Attending an Additional Support Needs Tribunal - useful information & guidance

This area of the website provides useful information and guidance for you should you be required to attend an Additional Support Needs Tribunal and includes information in relation to the hearing venues where Tribunals are held throughout Scotland, guidance documents issued by the President of the Additional Support Needs Tribunals and guidance on how to claim expenses you have incurred attending a Tribunal, as well as the actual expense forms.

Hearing Venues

Hearings are normally held in hotels and conference centres throughout Scotland. We aim to make the venues convenient, accessible and appropriate for all parties attending a hearing.

Presidential Guidance & Directions

The President of the Additional Support Needs Tribunals has produced a standing direction to be issued to all education authorities from 1 April 2007, in relation to obtaining information on the child. It is intended, by issuing such a direction on all references, a Tribunal will have relevant and consistent background information relating to the child who is the subject of a reference. Claiming Expenses

Parents will be able to claim reasonable travel expenses for themselves and:

  • the child or young person who is the subject of the reference;
  • a relative or friend who will look after the child or young person;
  • their supporter;
  • their representative, if they have one (if the representative is not able to claim these from any other source); and
  • their two main witnesses.

No travel expenses will be paid to the education authority for anyone attending.
